New Toll Payment Rules from November 15: Higher Charges Without FASTag, But Digital Payment Gets Relief

Big news for all highway travelers! The government has announced a major change in toll payment rules that will take effect across India from November 15, 2025. If you pass through a toll plaza without a FASTag, be prepared to pay more than before — although there’s also some good news for those who prefer digital payments.

What Are the New Toll Rules?

The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has amended the National Highways Fee Collection Rules, 2008. According to the new update:

  • If a vehicle enters a toll plaza without a FASTag and pays in cash, the driver will now be charged double the regular toll fee.
  • However, if the same vehicle pays using UPI or other digital payment methods, the fee will be 1.25 times the regular amount.

Example to Understand the Change

Let’s assume the toll amount is Rs.100:

  • FASTag working properly: Rs.100
  • FASTag not working & cash payment: Rs.200
  • FASTag not working & digital payment: Rs.125

So, drivers who choose digital payment options will now save money compared to those paying in cash.

Why Has the Government Introduced This Change?

The Ministry explained that the new rule is designed to make toll collection more transparent and efficient. It aims to:

  • Encourage digital transactions over cash.
  • Reduce waiting time and long queues at toll plazas.
  • Provide a smoother and faster travel experience for all road users.

Who Will Benefit Most?

This change is especially beneficial for drivers whose FASTag has expired or stopped working. Instead of paying double the toll in cash, they can now use UPI or any digital method to pay just 1.25 times the fee, saving both time and money.
