Indian Railways has implemented a major change in the Tatkal ticket booking system to curb misuse and provide fair access to genuine passengers. Now, passengers booking Tatkal tickets from railway reservation counters will receive a one-time password (OTP) on their mobile number. The ticket will be issued only after verifying this OTP.
This new rule ensures that Tatkal tickets cannot be issued without a valid mobile number, helping stop the growing misuse by touts and middlemen.
Tatkal Ticket Booking New Rule 2025: How the OTP Process Works
When a passenger submits a reservation form at the booking counter, they will now have to mention their mobile number on the form.
For Tatkal bookings, an OTP will be automatically sent to the passenger’s phone after the form is submitted.
- The counter staff will enter the OTP into the system
- The ticket will be confirmed only after OTP verification
- If an incorrect OTP is entered or the OTP is not provided, the ticket will not be issued
Why This Rule Was Introduced
Tatkal tickets are often exploited by touts who block bulk seats and sell them at inflated prices. With the new OTP rule:
- Fake mobile numbers cannot be used
- Touts will not be able to book tickets in large numbers
- Genuine passengers will get a better chance to secure Tatkal tickets
Indian Railways initially tested this system on select routes and observed excellent results. After making Aadhaar-based verification mandatory for online Tatkal bookings earlier, the same strict process is now being extended to offline booking counters. The new system will be rolled out across all trains nationwide in the coming days.
Key Benefits of the New Tatkal OTP System
- More transparency in Tatkal booking
- Reduced chances of fraud and black-marketing
- Easier availability of tickets for genuine passengers
- Strong monitoring and verification system
