In a shocking turn of events, Team India’s ODI vice-captain Shreyas Iyer was rushed to a hospital in Sydney after suffering a serious rib injury that led to internal bleeding during the third and final ODI against Australia on Saturday. The incident occurred at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) when Iyer took a stunning catch to dismiss Alex Carey, but the impact caused a laceration to his spleen, putting his life in danger.
BCCI Confirms Iyer’s Injury and Recovery
According to an official BCCI statement released on Monday, Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage, which resulted in a spleen laceration. He was immediately taken to the hospital for medical evaluation.
The statement said:
“Shreyas Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well.”
The BCCI Medical Team, in coordination with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring Iyer’s condition. The Indian team doctor will remain in Sydney to oversee his daily recovery and provide constant medical updates.
Quick Thinking by Medical Team Saved His Life
According to a report by Dainik Jagran, Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala, head of the ICC Medical Committee, BCCI Medical Panel, and the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Centre for Sports Medicine, reviewed Iyer’s reports sent from Sydney. Dr. Pardiwala, who has previously supervised the treatments of Rishabh Pant and Jasprit Bumrah, praised the on-ground medical staff for their life-saving intervention.
In his email to the BCCI, Dr. Pardiwala wrote:
“Last but not least, congratulations to the medical team on the ground. Your timely diagnosis and immediate action saved a life.”
Moment of Crisis on the Field
As per a PTI report, Iyer reportedly collapsed in the dressing room after leaving the field, and his vital signs dropped dangerously. The BCCI medical staff immediately stabilised him and ensured his quick transfer to the hospital.
A source told PTI:
“The team doctor and physio didn’t take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon.”
Out of Danger and Recovering in Sydney
According to Cricbuzz, Iyer has been shifted out of the ICU and is now out of danger. His close friends in Sydney are currently with him, while a family member from Mumbai is expected to join him soon after visa formalities are completed.
The cricket community and fans across the world have sent their best wishes for Iyer’s speedy recovery. His determination and the BCCI medical team’s timely action have undoubtedly prevented a tragedy.
