If you’re planning an international trip, there’s one important requirement you shouldn’t overlook—travel insurance. Several countries around the world now require visitors to have valid travel insurance before they can enter. In many cases, travelers without adequate insurance may be denied a visa or refused entry.

The move comes as healthcare costs continue to rise globally. A medical emergency in a foreign country can lead to significant expenses, and travel insurance helps protect travelers from unexpected financial burdens.

Why Travel Insurance Has Become So Important

Travel insurance is designed to provide financial protection during your trip. Depending on the policy, it can cover medical emergencies, hospitalization, trip cancellations, lost baggage, flight delays, and other unforeseen situations.

Many governments have made travel insurance compulsory to ensure that visitors can cover their own medical costs if an emergency occurs during their stay.

Schengen Countries Have Strict Insurance Requirements

The Schengen Area, which includes popular European destinations such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, and Switzerland, has some of the strictest travel insurance rules for visitors.

Travelers applying for a Schengen visa must have travel insurance that provides medical coverage of at least €30,000 (approximately ₹29 lakh, depending on exchange rates). The insurance policy must remain valid throughout the entire duration of the trip and cover emergency medical treatment and hospitalization.

Without meeting these requirements, visa applications may be rejected.

Countries Where Travel Insurance Is Often Required

Apart from Schengen countries, several other destinations may require proof of travel insurance depending on visa type, length of stay, or specific entry regulations. Travelers should always verify the latest requirements before booking their trip.

Some countries may also ask for insurance coverage related to medical emergencies, accidents, or emergency evacuation.

What Should a Good Travel Insurance Policy Cover?

Before purchasing a policy, travelers should check whether it includes:

  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Hospitalization expenses
  • Medical evacuation
  • Personal accident coverage
  • Trip cancellation protection
  • Lost or delayed baggage coverage
  • Passport loss assistance
  • Flight delay benefits

Choosing a comprehensive policy can help avoid unexpected expenses during international travel.

How Much Does Travel Insurance Cost?

Travel insurance is generally affordable compared to the overall cost of an international trip. The premium depends on factors such as:

  • Destination country
  • Duration of travel
  • Age of the traveler
  • Coverage amount
  • Type of policy selected

A small investment in travel insurance can provide significant financial protection if an emergency arises abroad.
