UPI has made digital payments faster and more convenient than ever. From paying utility bills to shopping and transferring funds, everything can be done within seconds using a smartphone. However, the speed and ease of UPI transactions sometimes lead to mistakes.

Many users accidentally enter the wrong amount or transfer more money than intended. If you have mistakenly sent a higher amount through UPI, there is no need to panic. There are several steps you can take to try and recover your money.

What Should You Do First?

If you realize the mistake immediately after making the payment, contact the recipient and request a refund. In many cases, the person or organization receiving the money may return the amount once informed about the error.

However, if you notice the mistake later, such as the next day, you should still take action as soon as possible.

Contact the Recipient

Financial experts recommend that the first step should always be reaching out to the recipient. Explain the situation and politely ask for a refund. Many payment errors are resolved directly between the sender and the recipient.

File a Complaint Immediately

If the amount is significant or the recipient does not respond, raise a complaint through your bank and the UPI application used for the transaction.

While filing a complaint, keep the following details ready:

  • Transaction ID
  • Payment receipt
  • Screenshot of the transaction
  • Date and time of payment
  • Recipient details

These documents can help speed up the dispute resolution process.

Can a UPI Transaction Be Reversed?

A completed UPI transaction cannot be directly canceled or reversed. However, banks and payment service providers can assist through their dispute resolution mechanisms.

Once a complaint is registered, the bank may investigate the matter and coordinate with the recipient’s bank to find a solution.

What If the Recipient Refuses to Return the Money?

According to experts, a person does not automatically gain legal ownership of money received by mistake. If the recipient refuses to return the amount, you should escalate the complaint through your bank and file a formal dispute on the UPI platform.

The bank will review the case and may take further action based on the transaction details and applicable regulations.
