Good news for taxpayers! The Income Tax Department has introduced a brand-new feature on its e-filing portal that will make filing and tracking your Income Tax Return (ITR) much easier. With this update, taxpayers will be able to directly check the status of their ITR files online — including when the file reaches the assessing officer and when it’s reviewed.
New Change in the e-Filing Portal
The newly added feature lets taxpayers track the progress of their ITR in real time. This ensures complete transparency and privacy — only the individual who has filed the return will be able to view the file’s status. You’ll now be able to see whether your ITR has been reviewed by the officer or is still under process.
Benefits for Taxpayers
This update comes as a major relief for taxpayers, offering several advantages:
- Real-time status updates on your ITR file.
- Increased accountability among tax officials for timely processing.
- Digital transparency, which will help resolve delays or disputes faster.
With this new feature, taxpayers will no longer need to rely on repeated inquiries or manual follow-ups to know their ITR status.
When Will It Be Implemented?
The Income Tax Department is expected to issue an official notification about this new tracking feature by the end of this year. It will likely become effective from the financial year 2026-27. This means that taxpayers filing their ITRs next year will be able to enjoy this new facility.
Changes in Income Tax Rules
In addition to the new tracking feature, the department is also working on simplifying the Income Tax Act. Currently, there are over 500 rules, but the new framework aims to reduce this number to around 400, making the tax process simpler and more efficient.
With fewer rules and a more transparent digital system, filing and tracking your ITR will become easier than ever.
